I take a deep and slow breath for as long as I can,(increase the number count, 1,2,3 etc) hold it as long as I can and slowly release as long as I can. And repeat, but upon the point their is any doubt what the previous number was, the count starts over. It adds a challenge and interest and requires a focus so the mind quiets. This is why I find the other language to be useful, or counting in the alphabet backwards. The position is easier to confuse.
